AF Chart Substitute

One the major issues involved with Autofocus are AF Charts.  It seems like almost every model has its own set of 'special' charts.

For most camera repair shops the idea of sorting, storing and using a vast array of charts is impractical.  And their costs, economically unfeasible (some charts are reasonable while others can cost nearly $1,000)

However when you remember that AF sensors are used to focus on images and not charts, you'll be able to see that simple substitutes can be used.  The qualification is that the Black and White target must match to the type of sensor under test.

Horizontal sensors require horizontal targets, vertical sensors require vertical targets, diagonal sensors require diagonal targets.  Since the software identifies the type of sensor under test, there is no question which target to use.

We use a simple White board and the draw the appropriate type of black box.
