Driver Requirements

Driver Requirements

Most Canon cameras require a consumer driver and a factory service mode driver.  Communication between the PC and camera starts with the consumer driver and then switches to the factory service mode driver when the camera connects to service adjustment software.

Consumer driver:
  • Early models use a WIA driver.  Later models use a PTP driver.
  • The WIA driver is available from the Canon Solutions disk or through a Canon Factory Website.  Each WIA driver is model specific (you need a WIA driver for that model).
  • The PTP driver is part of the XP operating system.  The PTP driver is generic (you need only one PTP driver)

Factory Mode driver:
  • When the camera connects to the service software it must switch drivers to the Factory DCP driver.  This driver is part of every software purchase but only needs to be installed one time.
