On Mon, Jan 30, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I have a XTi inhere that is dead. The P fuse on the dc board is good. It seems to have a battery drain so signs of moisture. Any pearls?

There is an "K" fuse on the Main PC Board under the right-hand metal shield. Check it. Also there is a "JH" transistor that burns out under that shield. There are pictures here...

Here's a close-up...

NIKON D3 Battery drain with lens
Wednesday, January 04, 2012 1:13 PM
I’ve got this camera that’s taking years (that I can’t afford) off me. Camera works great with all older lenses, but when a 10 pin AF-S lens is mounted and you switch the focus to A, the camera will not fire and the battery indicator flashes as if the battery is to low to operate the camera.
Turn the camera off, switch the lens to manual, turn on and the camera works fine. I’ve tried other lenses and the same results. It’s like it doesn’t have the power to operate the focus drive in the lens. But the battery is fully charged! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Vinny

Probably the power Connection FPC part# 1S025-020. This flex does a lot of power distribution for the D3 and is located on the rewind side of the mirror box.
Had a D700 with same problem….worked only with NON AF-S lenses. Putting on an AF-S lens would make the battery symbol flash low batt and no focus operation. Also had a D3 recently that was completely dead and the connection FPC solved that problem too.
Suspect bad lenses to be damaging this part though in the case of the D700 PD PCB, there was a broken component on the board. The component was glued down to the board in two pieces…it was obvious that the part was broken during manufacture of board.

Thanks Mike, that was it !! I replaced the connector FPC you suggested and it’s working. A hard winding road, but I got there! Vinny / LeZot Camera Repair

Advise please.
Customer brought his camera in and said shutter occasionally locks up. I've not got it to malfunction in 75 shots. Probably should replace shutter, Aperture control unit and anything else???? He did not bring a lens in. I've only had a couple of these in so any insight would be much appreciated. Ron /

I have repaired the problem with this camera but still get Err99. Does that have to be cleared before the camera will work properly? Frank / CAMERA WIZ

unknown on this model .. even in known models it depends on the internal error code / chuck

Some advise on these phase switches. Its not just cleaning ... but pressure.
A number of times we have run into the phase sw working but .. closer checks show noise .. which leads to intermittent or continuous problems ... err 99's + the internal error codes keep showing shutter or phase sw problems. a close check of the phase sw shows noise and increasing tension fixes the problem.
I've had feedback from several others telling me the same thing. / chuck

Definitely clean the phase switches. Could also be a motor issue. / Sam

Thank you so much!
Not only was the phase switch dirty but 2 of the contacts were bent. There was a lot of play on the brush. I heated the stakes to tighten the brush and cleaned and realigned them. Works fine.
The camera was giving a 99 error but had a problem with the sensor mask slipping down. I never checked the phase switch while I had it apart. Lesson learned.
Thank you again Chuck and Sam.
